How To Make Computer A WiFi Hotspot To Share Internet Connection

In this article, we’ll show how you can make your computer to act as a WiFi Hotspot and share its Internet connection with other devices.

Just before we dive in, lets go back to the basics first.

What Is A Hotspot?

How To Make Computer A WiFi Hotspot To Share Internet Connection

Hotspot is a physical location where a central device provides internet access to multiple devices.

Why Make Computer (PC) Into A WiFi Hotspot?

Let’s face it, we love our devices but, we can’t stand when they’re not connected which is why we seek WiFi everywhere we go.

When airports and hotels charge you per device, don’t you wish you could just pay once and get everything online? And what if you’re stuck somewhere with only a wired Ethernet connection?

Have you ever wanted to share your connection from your 4G USB card or tethered smartphone? Or maybe share your VPN connection so your Play station/X-box consoles can access region-restricted content?

The good news is, you can now do all that and more with an app called Connectify Hotspot app.

Hotspot allows your connected Windows PC to easily share internet connection with friends, co-workers and all your mobile devices so you can trade files, play games and much more.

Hotspot can even act as a repeater, boosting the range of your WiFi signal. Check out the graphical video on to make your computer as a WiFi hotspot.

How Does Connectify Work?

Connectify Hotspot turns your computer into a virtual router. Thanks to the “Virtual WiFi” technology that’s built into Windows 7, 8/8.1 and 10, your computer can create a WiFi hotspot, even while it stays connected to another WiFi network.

However, Connectify Hotspot is a lot more than just a wrapper around these command-line tools. Connectify Hotspot is a full suite of powerful routing software (NAT, DNS, and DHCP) that lets you share any Internet connection with any device that uses WiFi or wired Ethernet.

Is Connectify free?

Connectify offers both free and paid service. The free plan is called Lite and you can only have a hotspot session for 60 minutes.

You can always restart the 60-minutes counter so you can use the hotspot again. If you don’t like this and other limitations, we would highly recommend that you upgrade to their paid service for uninterrupted service and access to other paid features.

Why Connectify’s Privacy Monitor Is Showing I’m Exposed?

Whenever you connect to the Internet, your device(s) will be assigned with an IP address and your location can be seen by anyone on the Internet.

Connectify Privacy monitor detects this and it will show whether your connection details are exposed or not.

Why Connectify's Privacy Monitor Is Showing I'm Exposed?

If you’re exposed and especially if you’re on public WiFi, anyone with a bad intention can see what you’re doing online and may steal data from your device.

To secure your privacy, you will need to use a VPN service, which will encrypt your connection through a secure service and hides your real location/IP address so you can access the Internet anonymously.

How Do I Secure My Connection For Free?

I would highly recommend that use free VPN service to secure your connection.

Once you’re connected to the VPN, the Privacy Monitor will indicate your IP and location are secured. If you don’t see this, simply restart Connectify app.

How Many Devices Can Be Connected To A Hotspot?

Connectify Hotspot does not limit the number of client devices, but you can reach the limit that your wireless adapter will support.

The actual limit will depend on the wireless adapter itself, but most of the common adapters reach the limit somewhere in the 10-20 client range.

You will also need to consider your bandwidth. Say if you’re on a 100 Mbps line and you have 4 devices connected. Each of them will share the bandwidth accordingly. i.e. 25 Mbps max per device.
